2. the asteroid was hurtling straight for earth

I was sitting on my bed, next to all my friends, laughing like there was no tomorrow. I had never laughed that hard in my life, but little did I know that it would be the last time in a very long time.
When we heard the TV come on suddenly, we knew something was wrong. TV's didn't just come on for no reason. We watched intently as the news people talked frantically, something about a mass hurdling towards the earth. I squeezed my eyes shut and pretended it wasn't happening, this couldn't be it, I didn't have enough time, etc etc. I was the closest to the phone out of all of my friends, and I clumsily grabbed it and dialed my mom's number. She was at work, but she must've known something was wrong. After two rings, she finally picked up.
"Hello? Honey? Are you okay?" my mom said, rushing through her words.
"Yes I'm fine but I'm so scared. Are you coming home?" I said, trying my best to keep a calm demeanor.
"I'm coming as fast as I can, but I'm coming all the way from downtown. I might not get back home in time. I love you," she said, and I could tell by the tone of her voice she severely doubted she would get home in time. I managed to get out a quick, "love you too," before the tears hit.
I put down the phone, which by now had three droplets of water running down the side, which I realized after a minute were my tears. I watched each one slowly roll down, until each of them hit the grey counter top. I finally looked up, after composing myself, to meet the gaze of all my frightened friends, who didn't know what to do. I got up and walked outside to my front yard. I breathed in the smell of the slightly damp grass from yesterday, the neighbors' leftover barbeque smell, and I felt the tenseness in the air. I closed my eyes for a minute, letting the wind hit my shirt, feeling slightly cold but not caring. I felt a presence to my right side, and saw my dog, pepper, standing protectively by my leg. I looked at his scared face and saw the fear, but also a look of determination on his small, cute face. I thought if my dog can be courageous, so can I, so I walked back inside and told my friends to all protect themselves - we didn't have enough time. We constructed blankets, matresses, couches, and anything that could help and put it all around us, so we were enclosed in a pile of random household things. A slight whistling noise approached us, coming faster and faster towards us. It got so loud, I covered my ears and squeezed my eyes as shut as they could go. At that moment, I felt a huge boom thud, louder than anything i had ever heard, sending waves of pain through my body, wrecking our meager protection, shattering me.
