1) Using the 'Holocaust' MetaphorThe PETA, or People for Ethical Treatments of Animals, released a campaign called "Holocaust on your Plate." The campaign's purpose was to compare the slaughter of animals for human's food to the 6 million Jews who were slaughtered in the Nazi concentration camps. This campaign was released in San Diego, and then in Berlin shortly after. Once the campaign was released in Berlin, the Central Council of Jews in Germany decided to sue the PETA for their campaign, and 5 years later, the German Supreme Court decided to ban the images from German civilians. Ingrid Newkirk, who is the CEO of the PETA and allowed the campaign to be released, is receiving major backlash from the offended Jews. However, the fact that a Jewish member in the company came up with the idea has not helped ease the backlash from the Jews. The PETA is currently protected by freedom of speech, and claim that their actions are completely justified. Nevertheless, the company is causing controversy and much anger from the Jewish community worldwide.
My opinion:
I think that the holocaust, the slaughtering of 6 million Jews, should NOT be compared to animals being killed for meat. I believe that animals are treated unfairly and should receive better conditions, but it is disrespectful to compare the animals to the Jews who were mercilessly killed in masses just because of their ethnicity and faith.
2) Publishing Drunk Drivers' photos
In 1997, a man named Don White decided that in The Anderson News, he wanted to start making some more consequential choices to residents who would drink and drive - he wanted to start publishing their picture in the newspaper. Starting by February, 1998, White published 3 photos of people convicted of DUI in that past month, and then started to expand the policy and publish photos of people convicted of DUIs weekly. It can be debated whether or not the policy kept drunk drivers off the road, but White claims that it certainly helped keep a specific group of teenagers who drank off the road. Later on, The Anderson News started to receive information that people's families were being affected, being blamed for their family members' actions. In one case, a teenager was so worried about how his family would react to his picture in the newspaper, that he killed himself. The Anderson News certainly faces a dilemma about publishing the pictures of drunk drivers.
My opinion:
I believe that alcohol mixed with driving is definitely a problem, and there should be consequences to taking the risk of drinking and driving. Although it's so sad to see how people are reacting to their photos being in the newspaper, people who take that risk of choosing to drink and drive should be held responsible for their actions, and they should be prepared to face media and discrimination from others if they are willing to put their life and other lives at risk on the road. That said, I don't think that the Anderson News should take the process of putting people's pictures after drinking and driving on the newspaper any further.
3) Controversy Over a Concert
Previous members of a rock band decided to attend the 2004 election campaign for the purpose of helping to elect a U.S. Senate candidate. The campaign, hosted in Denver, was advised by editors to reporters to not go to it. This advice stirred up controversy over whether or not reporters should be allowed to go to events and political campaigns on their own accord. Reporters took these statements as a sign of their leaders not trusting them, however, many said that the issue was mainly if people would trust the newspaper after knowing that the reporters and journalists are active supporters of different views.
My opinion:
I think that reporters and newspaper staff should be allowed to attend whatever events they would like, as long as they are not discriminating against views that differ from them. It's unrealistic to believe that news reporters are completely unbiased, because that's just against human nature. In fact, I think as long as reporters are proving to be open and are going to different, diverse, events, then it shows that they are well-rounded about different subjects and are well-educated.
