My Top Story from the Century

Major Stories from the 1900's

1. Japan bombs Pearl Harbor (1941)

Summary: On December 7th, 1941, the Japanese air force bombed Pearl Harbor, killing over 2,000 American soldiers.  It was along with killing soldiers, the attack destroyed many of the U.S's weapons for WWII. The Japanese thought Americans would back down, but it stirred us to officially join WWII.
Why it was important: This gruesome event, which killed so many people, was important to cover because of the sudden turn of events. Many people would look to the newspapers to see if U.S would join WWII. Out of anger, loss, and pride for our country, the USA joined the war, and American citizens viewed it as something incredibly important to justify all of the losses.

2. Women Win the Vote (1920)

Summary: After fighting for women's right to vote for many years and suffering in the process, women finally gained the right to vote in 1920. This accomplishment was arguably the first major movement towards women's rights, and without this, women may have never achieved the right to vote. This signified the US making steps to equality.
Why it was important: To imagine seeing this on the front page of a newspaper for the first time is something incredible. After working so hard to achieve this goal, women were finally starting to learn how they could make a difference. To many women, seeing something they helped achieved on a front page must have sparked so much emotion and pride in themselves.

3. D-Day invasion marks beginning of the end of WWII (1944)

Summary: After years of our world's worst time, D-Day finally gave some hope that we could put this war against Hitler to an end. The invasion included over 156,000 American, British, and Canadian soldiers invading the beaches of five beaches to give a surprise attack. Without the extensive planning, WWII could have lasted so much longer.
Why it was important: Seeing as it was a surprise attack, it was a surprise to Americans to see it on the first page. It was a new turn that this awful war could finally turn around in the allies' favor. Years of war had past, so many lives had been lost, and so many families ripped apart, Americans needed some beneficial news to console them and give them faith that we could win against the Nazis.
